It's time to review the Kooryunderup / Mount Hallowell Reserve Management Plan (2008)!

The Kooryunderup / Mount Hallowell Reserve is an A class reserve, subject to the highest degree of protection under the Lands Administration Act (1997). In recent years, a number of consultations have taken place about the future of the reserve, and now it's time to step back, review, re-engage with our community and bring in an independent consultant to help us identify the best path forward for the management of the reserve.

At the October Ordinary Council Meeting on 29 October 2024, Council endorsed Aurora Environmental as the preferred independent environmental consultant to carry out an in-depth review of the existing Management Plan, other relevant surveys and background information, in addition to a robust community consultation process and audit of existing trails, management goals and actions as they relate to both environmental and recreational values. All of this information will then be analysed and collated into a draft Management Plan which will be made available for Public Comment before it's finalised.

Council endorsed the project Scope of Works and Community Engagement Plan at the same meeting.

So, what's this review all about?

The Scope of Works states that this project intends to:

  • review and audit the 2008 plan's management actions
  • review the background information and undertake a literature review
  • map all existing tracks and trails across the reserve
  • re-define the management goals consistent with the reserve purpose of 'conservation and recreation'
  • update management actions relevant to management goals, opportunities and constraints for both conservation and recreation.

The Community Engagement Plan identifies requirements for community engagement to be carried out by the consultant, including one-on-one stakeholder consultations and a community-wide survey. A key stakeholder list is included in the Community Engagement Plan to act as a starting point to ensure the consultant reaches out to the whole community during the review process.

How can I get involved in the review?

Community input is going to be one of the key pillars of the reviewed Management Plan, so please make sure you have your say during the community consultation process.

Once the consultant gets to work, we'll soon be able to publish information to this page about up-coming community engagement activities, including specific dates and locations. You can subscribe to 'Follow This Project' to receive email updates (look for the 'STAY INFORMED' icon: scroll down on mobile/to the right of screen on PC), or you can keep an eye on local media and social media for more information as it comes to hand - we'll be sure to promote the community engagement widely when the time comes!

There will be a number of ways to participate in the consultation, including in-person, online and over-the-phone connection points. Check out the Community Engagement Plan for more details, but you can get involved by participating in any of the following:

  • One-on-one stakeholder engagements with consultant
  • Community Survey - Open 20 November - Friday 17 January 2025
  • Public Comment period on the Draft Plan

Or, you can write to us at any time at enquiries@denmark.wa.gov.au or via post to Shire of Denmark PO Box 183 Denmark WA 6333 or in person 953 South Coast Hwy Denmark.

What's the background of this review?

The review and update of the Management Plan is consistent with our Strategic Community Plan Our Future 2033 which identifies environmental conservation and protection as one of three primary Shire service delivery priorities and lists the Management Plan as a key existing plan to turn our vision into action by operating as environmental custodians for the future.

The consultant will have a range of background information to consider as part of the review process including, but not limited to, the following documents:
